Margarita Sames
The woman behind the name.
Margarita Sames and her husband Bill owned a
villa near the Flamingo Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. Just after W.W. II, Acapulco was a
playground for the rich and famous. During that time, they became very friendly with movie
stars and prominent businessmen that would vacation there and formed a very tight knit
group. Some of the stars in the group included Fred MacMurray, Lana Turner and John Wayne.
As a result, the Sames house was also the setting for many wild parties - lasting for
days. Shortly before Christmas '48, Margarita was challenged by several members of the
group to come up with a new and exciting cocktail. They were tired of drinking Beer and
Bloody Mary's. Many of her initial attempts were rejected and with each rejection, she was
playfully tossed into the pool by her movie star friends and
distinguished businessmen.
Then she decided to use Tequila on her next attempt, this time using Cointreu with
fresh Lime Juice. Having grown up in France, she was very familiar with Cointreau and had
also developed an appreciation for Mexico's native spirit, Tequila. She played with the amounts and eventually came up with what she felt was the
perfect ratio - 1 part Cointreau, 3 parts Tequila, and 1 part Lime Juice. Knowing that
most people drank Tequila preceded with a lick of salt, she chose to garnish her cocktail
with a rim of salt..... She credits the proliferation of the drink all over the World to her well known
friends, and the rest is history.
